Hi,

I am a new by and maybe this is a simple question but I can't answer by myself.

I would like to rename the audio file "in place" and not moving them.

I usually use Picard for this pourpose but I would like to move my tagghing work to beets because I prefer the command line.

In Picard you could specify a template and the files are renamed accordingly.

Thanks for your help and the wonderful software !!!

Regards,
Stefano

Can you please explain a little more about what you want? In particular, I don't know what the difference between "renaming" and "moving" is—they're one and the same from my perspective.

Maybe you'd just like to import with the "move" option enabled, and the directory pointing toward your current music directory? That will probably work, although we usually recommend you move your unimported music to a temporary directory instead. That way, you can clearly tell the difference between what you've imported already and what you haven't.

Thanks for your quick reply, I try to better explain my question.
My library is already correctly organized in this way:
Author/album/tracks

What I would like to do is:
- tagging the files
- import the track into beets database
- renaming the file with a template (ok, moving and renaming are the same) but without moving my files into an another path, they are already in the right place.

The reason for doing this is because in the same album directory there are others files related to the album (cue files jpegs, artworks, etc.) and I don't want manually move them too to the new path.

Is it possible? Or basically the problem is that my workflow is wrong?

Thanks for your time,
Stefano.

OK, a few options come to mind in that case:

1. Import everything without renaming (i.e., with `move` and `copy` turned off), since you say that the names are already correct.
2. Import with `move` enabled, and configure beets to match your current directory structure. Unless some artist or album name is wrong, the directory names won’t change.
3. Look into the third-party `copyartifacts` plugin, which can bring along those extra files into a new directory.
4. Engage in a little bit of arcane hackery with the `inline` plugin to preserve the current directory names.

All of these seem reasonable to me!

Thanks for your detailed answer.

I will try some of your option to find out the most suitable for me.

Your software is really great!!! :-D
