And so secretly, each woman snuck into the kitchen and put a pinch of
salt into the pot that was bubbling on the stove. None of the women knew that
the others had done so, and after so many pinches of salt, the food was quite
salty indeed.
When they served the food before the Alter Rebbe and his guest, both tasted
the food.
Then Rav Shneur Zalman added a pinch of salt to his food and was about to
do the same for Rav Shlomo as was his custom. Rav Shlomo stopped him, thanked
him and explained that the food was extremely salty and it was not possible to
add more salt!
The Alter Rebbe answered him with a story,"When I was a disciple in the
Mezritcher Maggid's home I once sat at his table. When the Maggid gave me a
spoonful of his own food as shirayim this completely took away my sense
of taste for food!"
