The Glossary of terms that describe bees: a guide for the nontaxonomist has two significant revisions.

One is a new url that people can actually remember: beeglossary.org

More significant is the addition of bee morphology figures, by Amanda Konishi, a scientific illustrator that I met on this listserv.  She used photos, online info, and microscopic examination of Ceratina micheneri to create 6 drawings with hyperlinked labels. C. micheneri has never looked this good.

There are a couple of ways that the glossary might  be useful to others that publish bee resources on the www:

  • If you need to use terms like hypostomal carina or to explain head dimensions, you could use links like I just did, and not have to spend page space to explain.
A further example … If McGinley’s Lasioglossum key were written today, if could look like this:

19(18). Dorsal propodeal surface strongly reticulate, appearing scabrous or strongly striatemesoscutum scabriculous; pronotal angle

  • Amanda’s drawings are pdf’s, which you could insert into a www page with embed code – let me know if you are interested.

As always, I invite suggestions about terms, examples, and images that I should add or correct.
