What happens when a Bengali director decides to bring his childhood world to life - filled with references to Tintin & Feluda, Bengal-centric historical events (Purulia Arms Drop, Netaji), a most amusing reference to Satyajit Ray - films it through a Wes Anderson lens and wants to be socially aware at the same time?

I wish I could call this a secret, underrated masterpiece like many others here but sadly it's not. Pretty clearly botched in the edit. Full marks for Basu dada's ambition, direction, Ranbir's performance, Ravi Varman's images, the music, and the potential this film had, but the over-complicated plot that completely loses steam by the end, a less-than-impressive Katrina, and the lack of a direct focus really brings this down quite a bit. Not to mention it's way WAY too fucking long.

maybe it overstays it's welcome, and perhaps the overtly energetic and whimsical tonalities get unbearing at certain moments but this is still such a fascinating oddity amongst the rather dire slate of bollywood in 2017.

basu takes all the goodwill he got from barfi and crafts one of the few actual musicals in bollywood. borrowing aesthetics of tintin and then smashing them into bengali culture to form a wholly unique film. this manages to do something interesting and unexpected almost every 30 seconds or so ??? whether it be a staggeringly well composed shot, a creative "song", or a narrative turn that noone expected, jagga jasoos is never content at being "by the numbers", which is simultaneously it's biggest positive and negative.

7 years ago, this film made me fall in love with cinema. It's messy, yet beautiful. I have so many fond memories attached with this film and it's so sweet. I remember being crazy hyped for this film and begging my grandparents to travel to another city just to watch this as there were no shows of it in my city.

The pacing was so off-putting for me, and as soon as I started getting into the film properly, it would suddenly just change into a whole other mood. I can see how it could have been a true classic, full of charm and quirkiness, but it simply didn't work out that way for me.
