The song vellai pookkal from the movie kannathil muthamittal is a master piece of Rahman and is based on the raga Hamsadhwani. My heart gets filled with peace and happiness whenever I hear this song.
First of all thanks for your comment. Yes Agreed. The song is set in kapi. But I still stand in my point that the Aalap portion is in Desh. [RMPDM GRGRS Prayoga is clearly used which affirms the raag desh]
Nandan,
Thanks for writing a comment. Very happy to know, people are following my blog. I had thrived hard to publish genuine/correct information. Its becoming possible only because of readers like you. Please find my comments inline for your suggestions/comments.
For an instance, if you take the case of IR, Vaan pole vannam kondu from salangai oli, which you would think is a pure classical song based on mohanam, he has used D1 in the same line [Mohanangal paadi vandhu] and that has made it vaasanthi. But this is just one line. So you can still say it is based on mohanam although there are variations.
My view : This has more & more of HamsaNandi chaya than Vasantha(please let
me know if you disagree)
Ravi : I am pretty much sure, the whole song revolves around vasantha. Let me know, where do you see usage of M2?]
My view : Classic Shankar-a-Bharanam base , how did you classify this as
Chenchurutti
Ravi : I agree with you in this completely[100%]. I missed this one. I was judgemental here based on charanam. If you see the charanam, the song has senchurutti chaayal. But overall, this is a mix of nilambari, kurinji and sankarabaranam. I will make this change in my post. Thanks for your nice observation.
Thanks Sudha. Very happy to see your comment. I am motivated by readers like you ?
