Hello B.O.W. Enthusiasts,

The ODNR Divisions of Wildlife and Watercraft are working on a pilot program that involves families.  This program is going to be unique in the fact that we want families with little or no boating and fishing experience and we are going to take you and your family from a novice skill set to where you all are comfortable in both aspects.

We have decided to give this opportunity to the loyal and outgoing women of the B.O.W program and give you a chance to extend the B.O.W. experience to your family.  We want your family to become part of our ODNR family.

For so long we have focused our programs on individuals and not necessarily on groups, with B.O.W. being the only exception.  With this approach, we are changing our outcome in programs which hopefully gives you and your family a better experience. We want to give you an experience to remember and hopefully that will be with your spouse and kids.  This will give your family time to bond and unplug from today’s hustle and bustle and enjoy nature.

I do want to disclose that this clinic is going to be based out of Delaware County and can eventually grow into a statewide program.  The only requirement for this program is to be a family with little or no boating and fishing experience.

If you are interested in participating in this new program then please follow this link http://watercraft.ohiodnr.gov/fotw and fill out the application and send it back to John Farson at john....@dnr.state.oh.us or Dawn Potter at dawn....@dnr.state.oh.us Please feel free to contact either of us with any additional questions.

Thanks for your interest,

Hello everyone,

Because you have expressed a desire to learn more about outdoor recreation, we thought we’d share an opportunity with you: Families On The Water is a pilot program from Ohio DNR -- a partnership among the Division of Wildlife, the Division of Watercraft, and the Division of Parks and Recreation -- to get the whole family outdoors to learn about and enjoy boating and fishing, together.

The program takes place at Alum Creek State Park in two different sessions:

  • June 9, 11 & 13, 2015 (fishing from a canoe/kayak)

  • July 14, 16 & 18, 2015 (fishing from a powerboat)

Families must commit to attending all events associated with the program including a family interview and successfully completing an Ohio Boating Education Course (Home Study version) provided by ODNR (if you don’t already hold this certification).

Participants will receive instruction on boat handling, pole rigging, fish species, and fishing technique as well as advice on how to shop, what to buy, what resources are available, and how to use them. In addition, the last day of each week will be a cook-out with ODNR staff and your family with your “catch”!

Deadline for completed applications is May 15, 2015. An application [pdf] is attached to this email.

Once accepted into the program, a $35 deposit (per family) is required. This fee will be refunded upon completion of all activities associated with the program. All materials, gear, boats, and equipment will be provided except that by June 9, participants 16 or older must have a valid Ohio fishing license. Upon acceptance to the program an agenda, specific locations and times including rain days will be provided.

Please pass this opportunity on to friends or family who you think might want to take advantage of this program to get everyone outside, together, enjoying time on the water.

If you are interested and need more information please contact me below. You may email or mail your application back to me. The program fee will not be needed until you and your family agree to participate. This will be a fascinating opportunity for you and your family!

Thank you and we look forward to spending time with you!

Dawn Potter, Families on the Water Program Coordinator
