With RSBY, India Tries to Curb the ‘Health-based Poverty Trap'

India's medical insurance initiative for the poor -- the Rashtriya Swasthya Bima Yojna -- was rolled out in 2008. Among other things, it provided hospitalization coverage of US$600. This is not the first attempt by the Indian government to create a safety net for those living below the poverty line. Four years on, the scheme has had its share of successes and challenges.

Why Eurozone Woes are Creating Headwinds for Global Firms

Europe is in crisis -- and that has major implications for multinational firms with significant operations in the region. In fact, while much is written about the race by corporations to penetrate emerging markets like China and Brazil, the reality is that the investment by multinationals in Europe dwarfs the assets they have in those fast-growing economies. And the sovereign debt crisis in Europe, along with weak economic growth, is sparking changes in how these firms operate -- altering everything from manufacturing strategies to marketing to financial maneuvers.

John Heyman: Gulf Should Spend More on Local Film Talent, Not Hollywood

British film and TV producer John Heyman has spent decades working on films. Heyman sees potential in cultivating film talent -- including creative and technical expertise -- within the Middle East and North Africa region, but says it will require more serious gestures from investors, who are already pouring millions into big-name studios. He speaks with Arabic Knowledge@Wharton about emerging world cinema, seizing the medium to educate others and how technology is impacting the industry. To help the world better understand the heritage of the MENA region, Heyman adds, local film and television production for a global audience must be developed.

At Dubai Forum, Arab Female Entrepreneurs Are Urged to Break from Traditional Choices

At a forum for Middle East businesswomen in Dubai, attendees heard about the regional challenges women face in becoming entrepreneurs. But one of the key issues, speakers said, was the limitations women were putting on themselves. Though funds for local businesses are now generously available in the Gulf, would-be female entrepreneurs are not being ambitious enough, experts said. Women need to lead more innovation and be involved in ICT startups, they said, instead of pursuing businesses concentrated in retail or the food industry.
