Successfully launched the first in-industry realistic paint visualization experience online (view in a room scene) end-to-end to help make shopping decisions easier for customers, which drove the online paint selling to +20%.

During the covid pandemic, I worked on a garage project to convert it into a gym room. I picked the wall paint color (Blissful Blue), thinking the wall color would go well in contrast with the vinyl flooring I have already installed. But after finishing the painting on all four walls, I was wrong with the original visualization I had in mind. So, I ended up re-painting again, which cost additional dollars. Also, I was not sure how many gallons of paint/what type of thinner I needed for the four walls, which caused frustrations going to store back and forth when I ran out of the paint/thinner, and I needed more to cover the rest of the wall.

As an engineering leader working for a home improvement retail, I thought deeply about my pain points in our customer's paint shopping journey. My goal was to evaluate this opportunity to deliver something significant and first in the industry to digitally bring a realistic paint visualization experience. This will allow customers to choose from thousands of variant colors we sell online and view them side by side in the bedroom, bathroom, kitchen, and dining to help make shopping decisions faster. Also, provide the ability to paint configurations based on the room's square footage with "Do It Yourself" videos and tips to drive better outcomes in their painting project.

During the covid pandemic with supply chain issues, we ran out of samples in the stores for customers to try out on the wall, so this was a dire need for customers to help visualize before making the decision. Working from home was the new normal during the pandemic, so most customers spent time painting their houses, office rooms, and garage projects.

Also, I was checking the sales/revenue data points for paint categories; the exciting fact is paint is the number one selling product in both stores and online with an incremental 5%-8% sales growth, especially during the pandemic, so definitely, this was super critical for us, and we wanted to increase the customer's confidence in buying the paint.

I connected with the product, engineering, UX, and data science team to discuss a few options. We divided as a group to assess what others are doing in the industry, what will be the key differentiator, how big is this market opportunity, what will be the customer and revenue impact, and construct OKRs with a clear product vision and roadmap. In parallel, as a team, we developed the proof of concept using AI/ML, 3DS Max, and V-ray software to bring realistic side-by-side visualization using pre-defined rooms.

In general, we have only the color-fill JavaScript version in the market for paint or any product visualization, but not the realistic version like what we invented. The AI layer we added takes the reflection of chosen paint for the entire room using natural light/sunlight and night view to give a realistic side-by-side visualization.

We increased online paint sales to +20%, Improved the AOV by 50%, and the CVR nearly doubled as well as 2X sales compared to the prior year. Survey results came as 80% of customers strongly recommended buying paint using a visualizer to other customers. Store associates encouraged customers to go online/mobile to check the paint visualizer since they no longer have samples.

It was a great example of working backward from the customer. After the successful paint visualizer launch, our merchants started asking for additional categories for visualization experience, so we immediately dived into a Flooring visualizer, blind visualizer, and micro-visualizer experience. The paint visualizer launch has been featured in our quarterly earnings for significantly impacting the customer and, first in industry experience. This team has become "the" team for building the product visualization roadmap for the entire company.

"I'm thrilled to learn more about how the immersive and interactive visualization experience will shape the future of the retail industry". Thank you for taking the time to read. I really appreciate it.
