3D Modeling with Silhouettes

This looks like a neat way to create 3D models by using 2D drawing:

The example software produces an .obj file.  It should be possible to convert it to a .stl.

This reminds me of something I saw yesterday:

Supposedly this iPhone application can use  the built in camera to make a 3d model.  The models seem to look a little warped but it seems like something that would be fun to play with.  I believe I read somewhere that you can get STLs using this application somehow.  I don't have an iPhone so I can't play with it.
