Wondering if anyone is still active in this group? A friend and I are
getting our thing o matic on monday. I comes with the new MK6. Was
hoping to meet others that have 3d printers

I am, but I moved to Boise, ID. I need to transfer moderator status of
this group to someone in Oregon. :). Wanna volunteer? Congrats on the
thing-o-matic!

I just joined 2 days ago. I ordered my ToM last week, so it should get by April.
Wondering how many people here have any experience with MK6's.

Cid, I can take ownership of the group if you want.  I still miss the TechShop.

It would be nice to see some more activity on this group.  I'd be happy to get together if there is interest.

I dont think anyone has experience with the mk6. they just released it
and are just starting to ship them. I think we are getting one of the
first ones.

Sure I am willing to take over mod duties. We are planning on building
another one this summer. Im going to print out all of the parts that I
can and buy the rest from makerbot. I think I can put together another
thing o matic for about $600

Paul, by the power invested in me, by Google. You are now a manager
in this group. You may now go forth and Grant permission to post and
ban as you wish. Please be sure to manage responsibly. :)

You name dropped Techshop. Yeah i miss it too. The techshop was so
awesome! Too bad that it went under.

Supposedly Techshop PDX will be back. It's listed on the web site as
reopening Fall 2011.

I can talk to my friend as soon as we get her TOM together. She is
getting one of the very first MK6's. I would love to show it off. We
were hoping to get it this week but its not going to be here till
monday

I'm down in Eugene. I just finished building my TOM on Saturday.
It's been working fantastically! I still have a few tweaks to make
but right out of the gate it printed really, really well. My 20x20mm
calibration cube was slightly off but I managed to fix that pretty
quickly. Since I just finished, I do have some experience with the
MK6 stepstruder. If you guys need any help with anything, give me a
shout. If you are closer to Eugene, I might be able to help you out
in your build if you need a hand at any point.

I'm glad to see there are others nearby who are into 3d printing! Now
I need to find others closer to Eugene.

Are you able to adjust to flow rate to any value between 0 and 255 using the stepstruder, or is there still a practical lower limit?
Everything online currently only talks about using PWM for a DC motor, and therefore never experiments with a lower flow rate for possibly finer resolution without having to increase the feed rate to a drastic speed.

I haven't tried adjusting the flow rate at all yet.  Most of my skeinforge settings are at the defaults so far.  I have adjusted my raft settings a bit and increased my fill setting for some tests but that's about all.  I will look into how to adjust the flow rate and experiment when I have more time.  If you can point me in the right direction to adjust that setting, that would help.  I'll let you know once I find some results.  Honestly though I was pretty blown away with the resolution the TOM had right out of the box using the 3mm filament.  It's much better than I expected it to be.

I believe in the Carve section of Skeinforge is where you can play around with all sorts of value for flow rate and feed rate.
Can you post some pictures of the prints you have out of the box with standard settings?

I've taken a few shoddy camera phone photos so far.  I will link those now since I am at work and can't get better shots.  This was the very first print I did of a 20x20x10mm cube:

It ended up being closer to 18x21x10mm but I was able to resolve that by editing one file.  I can't remember which off the top of my head but once I can look through the files again I'll let you know.  It also was a bit sunken in on the top.  This was due to the .30 infill setting.  For some reason it fills the inner layers strangely, always putting large gaps in the same spot so the upper layers sink down to fill them.  I have since printed a cube at 1.0 infill and it didn't sink.  In fact, it bulged a little bit.  This was the second or third thing I printed:

I had a slight issue with that print where the curved side printed two walls that were sort of separated.  You can see a similar issue in this other print I did:

The ring is supposed to be a single loop, but it came out as two loops that were sort of off center.  I believe this is because it is losing steps on the X axis when micro stepping.  My X stage is a little stiffer than the Y and the belt was a bit loose.  I have since tightened the belt up but I haven't printed another ring to test it out yet.  I think before I try another one though I will increase the power slightly to the X motor.  I'm hoping that will resolve the issue.

I also have a problem where the raft sticks to the print way too much.  I tried reducing the raft density but that hasn't helped.  I have to play with more settings to figure that one out.  I can't ever rip the raft off completely.  Usually the overhanging edges just tear off.

One other note is that "orbit" is enabled by default.  This was annoying when I tried to print something large.  The orbit trail it took went too far off the print surface and the nozzle almost ran into a screw.  I disabled orbit and this hasn't been an issue so far, but I've only made one print since then.  I'll try to take better photos tonight if I can and if I have the time.

congrats on the TOM Rick. My friend and I just got done building hers
last weekend. she still needs to tweak the settings as well. Have you
tried the calibration software that was posted on the makerbot site? I
used a caliper and measured the thickness of my filament and found
that all of the rolls we have (3) are slightly smaller than 3mm. on
average they are 2.85. This affect the flow rate and lead to better
prints if you adjust for it (so I hear). were going to try this
weekend and I will report back.
