So the city of Albany makes all of their GIS data available on line.

http://www.cityofalbany.net/it/gis/datausers/index.php?view=ShapeFiles

I'm intending to run a session on using PostGIS (spatial extensions
for Postgres) using this data as an example of loading an entire data
set with many layers into a database and being able to do queries
against it.

I think it would be interesting to do a bit of hacking around building
apps that help residents and visitors to Albany make effective use of
this data.

I'd like to gather app suggestions beforehand, and potentially find
other data sets that would be useful for this sort of effort.

Let me know if this sort of thing sounds interesting to you.

If you are looking for a non-techie that is more of an end-user, GIS
freelancer, and civic planner by education, a buddy of mine is
interested in seeing if he could be useful to your pre-barcamp hack-a-
thon.

He's not quite the average citizen, but he's also not techie, more of
an end-user...
anyway, if you are interested to have his input, let me know how he
can contact you.

thanks,
alan
