To download the client, navigate to the following URL and, under the 'ownCloud desktop client' section in the Table of contents, click on the 'Mac OS' link for the macOS client. This will take you to the Download link for the latest ownCloud installer package for OSX, which you can then double-click and follow the instructions to install.

The next window (Figure C) asks what you want to sync. The client will automatically determine how much data you have on the server and if you already have Nextcloud data on your system.

Now you can enjoy the benefits of the desktop client with your Nextcloud server, including notifications and drag and drop from your file manager. Although you can connect to the Nextcloud server via a browser, the benefits of the desktop client make working with the server so much easier.

You can download the desktop client for your operating system from owncloud.org and install it. For instructions on how to install and work with the desktop client, see the online manual for the client. Apps for mobile devices (Android and iOS) are also available on owncloud.org.

The Owncloud client has delta sync capability, while the Nextcloud client does not. Delta sync means that it can upload only the parts of the file that have changed, rather than transferring the entire file. On the other hand, the Nextcloud client cannot even download multiple files in parallel, see issue #976.

The Owncloud desktop app manages to fit in smaller than a reasonable 20mb for the Windows and Mac editions, and a tiny 1.5mb for the Debian package. On the other hand, the Nextcloud Windows installer weighs in at a chonky 100mb+, and the Mac edition is about 80mb. The Nextcloud desktop Linux image is also about 100mb, but it not directly comparable since it is an appimage, which is much more compatible across Linux distros, but means that it has to bundle more things inside the image.

The Owncloud client comes by default as an MSI installer file, which is IMO, about the same as an EXE installer for the average user, but miles better for a sysadmin or someone using something like Chocolatey. They are even nice enough to provide options for whether to add a desktop shortcut, to not add the shell extension, to disable auto update, to launch after installation, the installation directory, and whether to reboot if needed.

On the other hand, the Nextcloud client comes as an NSIS EXE installer. It can be silently installed, and you can change the installation directory, but nothing else can be specified with install arguments, unlike the plethora available with Owncloud. There is an open issue #59 about this. To disable auto update, you either have to add a registry value (eew), or create/modify the configuration file for each and every user on the computer (double eew).

To be fair, neither of them allow specifying the server URL as an installation parameter, which would be really nice. Also, the Nextcloud client has some extra features added, such as being able to launch the browser directly into the talk app, and other Nextcloud apps.

https://drive_path/remote.php/webdav /user:username password
now that I transferred everything on yunohost I can no more do that: It keeps telling me that operation was not performed because user was not authentificated
but I can access it throught the web (with ie) both through web interface and through webdav in typing https://drive_path/remote.php/webdav while I am connected and finally, as a test, throught the owncloud desktop client
anyone had this issue?

If the client does not sychronise new files, or if there are file versionconflicts that cannot be resolved normally, it is possible that clientdatabase went out of sync. The database is kept by the client to keep trackof changed local files. It can be found in files .sync_XXXXXXX.* in thetop-level folder set up in the client, e.g.

Stop the client. You can delete all the .sync_XXXXXX.* files and start theclient again. Please expect creating the database and handling missingfiles to take even several hours, especially when you have many files.

Do you like the idea of DropBox but want to host the files on a server that you control. This how-to will walkthrough installing ownCloud on an ArchLinux installation and then configuring a Mac client to sync with it.

NOTE: The example configuration specifies the owncloud_data_dir as /usr/share/webapps/owncloud/data which by default does not exist. If you choose to use this location or specify a new one then remember that you will need to manually create it before trying to start the uWSGI service.

The web setup created the first admin user but in this step I want to create a non-admin user for myself. This is the user that I will setup within the desktop client to actually start syncing with the server.

At this stage I have successfully installed the ownCloud service and configured the desktop client to sync with it. The image below shows that the contents of the folder in my home directory are in sync with the web interface on the server.

From here I can install additional applications to extend the functionality of my ownCloud instance. I can also look into securing the communication between the desktop client and the server with https as the client recommended.

OwnCloud provides a free, open source file sharing and application server and platform with desktop and smartphone applications, allowing you to create a personal or corporate cloud under your own control. If you're a Dropbox user, then you're familiar with the advantages of a remote cloud, which keeps files on all of your desktops and devices in sync and allows you to share them with other people.
