Hi, my name is Nigel and i'm currently building a 4 door LB Beauford...purchased as an unfinished project. I was hoping that when I was told about this group at the kit car show by Tony that there would be a fair amount of activity. Historic posts show that it may not be the case. However, here I am, hoping that there are "lurkers" on here who may be able to help with some of my more immediate issues with the build.
My vehicle now has a 2.0lt Ford engine with a manual 5 speed box...oh yeah...it's got a weber carb on it.

All the underside has now been cleaned and de-rusted and painted. The engine has been stripped and rebuilt and ive changed the steering to power assisted.

My next project is the brakes. I've had two new brackets made for the handbrake, and I've now assembled all the kit for making the brake pipes.

Is anybody out there or am I wasting my time posting on here?

Nigel, Unfortunately, there are not as many builders out there as there used to be and a few of the more active google groupers have sold their cars so I’m not sure if they still participate in the group. However, everyone who is currently in the group will get a copy of your posting.  You mention what you have done to your car and where you are up to now with it but you don’t say what the problem or advice is which you require help with.   The online members are not always a chatty group but if you have a specific  problem then quite often someone may be able to help so don’t give up.   Liz

Hello Nigel.

In the past I have built 3 Beaufords, 2 off two door and one four door but that was many years ago when you collected the kits from Up-Holland near Skelmersdale and before all the new legislation came into being.

I expect that the kits as they are supplied now will be very different from the originals but it is good to know that there is still a lot of interest in them.

If you post particular queries I am sure you will get many helpful replies, good luck.

Hi Nigel,
I built a 4 door LWB around 8 years ago (my only one) and found it really useful to search out out other owners in my area to look at how they have 'solved' the various problems you will get. People were always generous with their time showing you their car and the specifics if you needed to see it. I always thought how daft it was that hundreds (?) of builders have all individually had to solve the same problem whilst the build manual remained firmly in the '70's! Not knowing at which stage your build is up to, particular difficult bits which spring to mind are the door lock actuating mechanism to convert the in/out push button to an up down motion for the lock and get around the window channel. After fitting the heater mechanism as described I found later I should have positioned it higher or got another type (electric?) as I have no depth for a radio in the under dash piece. I use the recommended tyre size but they catch on the wheel arches when the wheel is turned and the suspension compresses.  etc etc Have you decided what you are going to do with the roof mechanism? There are some fabulous solutions to this with fellow members.
Which area are you in? I am in East Lancashire.
Kind Regards
Peter

Thanks guys for replying. I suppose my immediate problem is with the brake lines. I have all the kit to make the lines now but not sure of the outlets on the master cylinder as to where they lead to and which circuit has the deceleleration valve
I'm still on the mechanicals at the moment. I have the carb to refurbish, brakes lines to make, wiring to fit and buy...looking at a new loom from Alan Boxhall. Also looking at a brand new heater matrix, fan and switch.

I've not done anything to the body yet, other than remove the loosely mounted panels so as they dont get damaged. As the kit was purchased 10 yrs ago by the previous owner I've found out all the glass will need to be replaced!!

As for the roof mechanism...I know not of what you speak. I have the roof. It's under my bed and of course the struts are seriously rusted. What's the issue with it?

Hi Nigel,

I sold my LBOT with a Ford 2.0 DOHC back in 2014 to a wedding car company but still have lots of photos of what finally got through IVA should these be of any assistance.  I understand that your 2 litre is not fuel injected so there are many differences.

It would be pertinent to  check whether the rear of your car has the relevant anchor points built in on which to secure the top rear seat belt straps,  Lap belts only were not acceptable to VOSA  from my experience with IVA.

In 2010 I took mine to be IVA’ed at Southampton only to find that they had never seen a Beauford before – Not a good start!  Apart from a list of nearly 100 inadequacies in the basic design that need to be changed,  for the rear seat belt anchors I was instructed to build in an A-frame each side made from 50 mm square x 5 mm thick tubing braced and welded back to the chassis as the angle iron glued to the rear body at shoulder height, the only possible place for top seat belt anchors, was effectively floating in space with only two M6 bolts through the bottom rear of the fibreglass body holding it to the rear chassis. Response from Beauford:  “We never have that problem when we have them IVA’ed – end of story”.  I trust that attitude changed!  Welding in the frame in the confined space behind the rear seat with at least two joins not only invisible to the eye but very near the fibreglass with a new paint job on the outside  is not an experience I wish to repeat!  At least it then got through IVA.

It is thus pertinent to take the finished car to be IVA’ed somewhere where they regularly encounter kit cars and particularly Beaufords.

What is being allowed now? Have others had similar experience?

Good Luck!

Hamish

Hi Hamish, Hi Melvyn. Thanks for your replies. Your Photo's would  be most helpful Hamish.

Today I replaced and made the final fix of my stainless steel bulkhead. I didn't like the alloy one that Beauford supplied. I've also positioned my new handbrake brackets. I need to remove the propshaft to drill the new holes and that'll be that one put to bed. I've just received information on the brake lines and deceleration valve position.
