Wheel Wobbles

Hi all,

New to the world of Beaufords having found a "Beauford barn-find" three months ago I am enjoying gradually working through a long list of issues but I seem to have one problem  that so far has remained unresolved - a case of the wheelie bad wobbles.

As far as I can tell, my running gear is late Cortina/early Sierra.  I have steel wheels into which are centre caps and onto those are spinners.  Whilst these are very attractive, I am suffering from steering wheel shake from 45mph to 55mph, far more than simple wheel balancing.

So far, I have had changed all rubbers, gators and bushes underneath as the originals were shot.  The steering rack is taut and precise.  The tracking and suspension has been set up and aligned to within .02 degrees on the Hunter system.  The wheels have then been balanced which did not solve the problem.  Spigots to improve the location of the wheel on the hub were next to be tried and whilst each stage has improved matters, that wobble is still there.  I have had the tyres tested to see if there is a hard patch on them from where the car sat in a barn for 20 years and apart from a bit of cracking between the treads, the white-wall tyres are as new.  (I live rurally in a farming area so popping down to a local aftermarket wheel retailer is a major undertaking).  It is almost as if the wheels warp a fraction as they are tightened to the wheel

So I have a couple of questions to those far more knowledgeable than I:

Firstly any other ideas, other than borrowing a set of 1970s ford wheels and trying those, or going to the only place in the country that balances the wheels on the car (which is in Oxfordshire I believe)?  ; and secondly,

as I have yet to meet up with another Beauford, what wheels and tyres do other people run in case I decide to go down the route of changing everything and starting from scratch?

Two photos attached one with spinners on and one with spinners off so you can see what lies beneath.

Many thanks for your help and comments

Hi, My LWB 4 door Beauford had the same problem as you, also having the
same suspension as you but alloy wheels, I replaced all the lower
suspension arm bushes which cured it. It then started again and after
checking everything I noticed one of the tapers were loose in a lower
balljoint which just needed the locknut/castlenut tightening, job cured.
You need to put a jack under arm to make sure you push taper back into
place otherwise the joint will turn round when tightening. Hope this
helps.

Hello David,  Thank you for your prompt reply.  I will have a look to see if I have a similar problem at the weekend.  Much appreciated.  Robin
