Enough changes that I think a bump in version number is necessary! If
you haven't already, check out the video at
http://beatsportable.com/2011/08/beats-1-7a-preview-and-250k-downloads/
(yes, Beats 1.x has over 250k downloads now!)

Major changes include the introduction of scaling, tablet-friendly
main menu layouts, completely redone screen-updating mechanism
(possibly unstable?), redesigned graphics, loadable graphics, osu! Mod
guidelines, osu! Mod sliders, and updated UHL and translations!

Things of importance to test is scaling, framerate, feedback on new
graphics (the old ones are still available as an option), and the osu!
Mod sliders (which do not behave exactly the same way as in osu!, but
its fine since its an extremely weird hack anyway).

Things to work on before the actual 1.7b release is repeating sliders
support (for osu! Mod), possibly spinners (but most likely not),
Scoreloop support, and possibly HeyZap support (what the heck, why
not). May also play around with menu sound effects and osu! sound
effects, but depends on amount of free time (will be deciding between
working on Beats 1.x, Beats2, and Tsukikage, my WIP Touhou clone).

Happy testing!

I will upload screenshots of everything (incl. Main Menu, which could still be somewhat bigger) in near future. I need Cm7 RC12 to do this (native screenshot menu at power button long-press, yay) and it still lacks keyboard patch 4 official  russian Moto Milestone =(
As 4 perfomance: 55 fps with background enabled. ZOMG!

Installed RC12 and after some magic here are some screenshots in FWGA
//and my Milestone is so much faster now
Also i have a feature suggestion: after unpausing the game why not give the player some time to prepare for resuming. Like this: "Paused" "Continue" . . . "Ready" . . . "GO!"

Screenshots look right ; )

For the pause-resume wait time, I can experiment with that, but I think it'll end up introducing more complexity due to the Android's Music Service being unreliable. Will probably end up implementing something instead like "tap the screen to resume".

Do you have a sample song for this and/or give more details? What happens when you increase or decrease the Speed setting?

Still slow framerate after a fresh reset? What about with the "Original" Note Skin? How about with "Show Background" off?

Whoa, so many people commenting. Nice to see. :-)

And I hadn't even gotten around to commenting on the previous version yet!

Menu looks fine now on my phone since the previous revision. I love
the new game-mode switching style.

I've noticed some extremely minor lag when playing a .sm file in osu!
mode on hard difficulty, but not otherwise. As in, I don't get up to
80 fps any more. Nothing like the lag reported by others.

I like the new look of osu! mod, with the lines connecting distant
beats. Although the only time I really see them is in Osu!rand mode,
because otherwise the beats tend to be too close together. (On my
phone) Examples in Screenshot 1/Screenshot 2 (osu!random). Contrast
Screenshot 4 (osu!pattern)

Sliders look great, but... I don't think I've figured out how to make
them work yet. Basically the only time I've managed to pass one was if
it was a short one and I was spamming. What am I supposed to do?

Oh yes, and if I switch over to osu!random mode on an actual .osz file
with sliders, something... weird happens. Like in Screenshot 3.
Sliders work fine in random mode for .sm files. In as far as I can
make them work for me at all, but that's me sucking, not due to Beats.

The FPS counter in older versions was actually inaccurate (anyone above 60 FPS is actually physically impossible since Android screens refresh at 60Hz), although the current method of calculations will occasionally go above 60 FPS due to rounding errors (but never much more). The new screen refreshing mechanism is a bit unstable and I haven't tested it thoroughly but I think its worth the risk for using since it allows large screens like tablets to actually run faster than 30 FPS. Curious on why it would have poor performance on the Zenithink ZT-180 though (and wondering if that's the only model)...

Sliders are a pretty ugly hack (which I don't plan on "fixing" as the proper "fix" would actually be rewriting the main Beats engine to support sliders, e.g. what Beats2 is for) and don't have the exact same behaviour as in actual osu!. I've removed the second number and made the slider path fatter in http://beatsportable.com/static/testing/beats-r573.apk so that should make things a bit easier to understand. The .sm -> osu logic wasn't meant to account for sliders in the first place, so yes, you'll get weird cases of sliders being placed on top of tap notes and such - I think that's acceptable for the time being considering how the hack works. As for Screenshot 3, could you link me to the beatmap that you are testing? In osu!, peppy uses .NET's built-in functions for calculating paths whereas I just create a bunch of bezier curves that mostly look close enough. Still trying to tweak things around so it looks closer to what osu! has, so sample beatmaps would help a lot.

I'll check all of that in the morning. ;-) I'll have time to play on
my way in to work.

I'm sorry if it looked like I was complaining about that, because I
honestly wasn't. I haven't noticed anything like that. I'm really
impressed by the conversion, actually!

The only thing I can think of that might have given that impression
was just me grumping again that in pattern mode, beats are really
close together in sm-> osu files. I wasn't expecting anything like a
fix on that anyway.

The screenshot was taken from http://osu.ppy.sh/s/9407 on medium, but
I've also noticed it on http://osu.ppy.sh/s/26882

(I love that second one a lot. It's very relaxing music to play, it
has plenty of curves and holds and enough notes to make it
interesting, but few enough to make it comfortably playable. It's not
so good for testing, though, as the stepfile has a rather long wait at
the start before notes start appearing)

I'll add again that this wasn't in normal osu! mode, but in
osu!RANDOM, with a proper osz file containing curves
The problem is not so much the curve going wonky, but that the 'end'
beat of the curve is no longer connected to it.

Quite possibly it is, but I still get 'FPS' calculations of 80+ on
average, sometimes shooting up to over a 100 (taking screenshots of
that is really tough, though, because my reaction time isn't quick
enough).

Maybe I'm actually seeing a percentage of max FPS, and the 100+ are
the rounding errors? Just thinking with my fingers, here.

Sliders look great, and if I put the speed on *really slow* (1.00x) I
can even sometimes manage to hit one. I still haven't figured out what
I do differently between the ones I do hit and the ones I don't,
though.

I do sometimes have the feeling, with long, fast sliders, that they
only appear halfway through the slide. Also if I miss the beat
*before* the slider, I will automatically miss the slider as well. I
guess now I know what people feel like when they see Oendan/EBA for
the first time, without any context explanation.

Sigh. It's a little frustrating. The sliders make Osu!mode really look
like it should, and on the songs that I managed to get anywhere before
failing miserably (because I missed 19 sliders out of 20) was about
ten times as fun to play as osu!mod in 1.6x. Really almost like
playing Oendan. But I can't figure out what I'm doing wrong. Now I
want to try a different phone to see if maybe it's the hardware's
fault (tiny screen and fat fingers, not usually a good combination.
But I've managed fine so far). But of course I don't know anyone else
with an Android phone that a) I have physical access to and b)
wouldn't mind me installing stuff on their phone.

After some testing catched 2 bugs
1)in landscape Beats! main menu logo overlaps the ad (1st screenshot)
2)in classic themed arrows, holds don't have a visible end 0_0 (2nd screenshot)

The missing 'end' to classic holds is because the arrow that used to
be there is gone. I'm trying to edit the image files to make a nice
closer, but I'm a total n00b at using image editing software for
something like this (You'd think drawing a triangle would be easy...)

Because Keripo took them out, I'm guessing. :-) They're not necessary
with the new 'default' graphics, more of a hindrance in that case
even.

As for asking anyone else to try... well, I didn't think it was up to
me to ask. I was trying to make a custom noteskin based on the
original one for myself, and if it turned out right, I could share. So
far unsuccessful, though.

Download from where to where?

It currently says on the Downloads page on the Beats Portable site
that Osu files can't as yet be downloaded directly to your phone. You
can download them to your computer and then put them on your phone
that way.

Or did you mean something else?

It can be downloaded directly using the phone browser firefox. I'd
tried it before.

A bit late (been super busy the past week) but Beats 1.7b FINAL
released. Pretty much the same as 1.7a-r570 just with a few changes.
Finally changing focus to Beats2 now ; )
