On the surface, eczema may seem like a minor skin irritation. If
you've lived with it for any period of time, like I have, you know
that's not the case at all. Eczema can actually be a chronic skin
condition that impacts each and every area of your life. It's painful
and itchy, it makes it difficult to sleep at times and it can have an
emotional toll on a person as well. In fact, I reached a point where I
started turning down social engagements because I couldn't bear the
thought of anyone seeing my eczema.
There are ways to find relief from symptoms of eczema. Each person who
has this red rash knows that it's really a journey of hits and misses.
Even when you see a dermatologist and are prescribed a medicated
ointment, you may not always find relief from symptoms of eczema with
it. That's because we all have different body chemistry and therefore
it's a matter of trying various techniques until you find one that
works best for your own skin.
One way to find relief from symptoms of eczema is to keep your home
cooler. This is particularly true for people who live in a climate
where the temperature dips in the winter. The heat that is generated
from a furnace or space heater is dry heat. This can really irritate
eczema and lead to more dryness and itching. Therefore it's a much
better idea to have the furnace turned down just a bit.
The laundry products you currently use may also be an irritant to your
skin. You may be able to find relief from symptoms of eczema by using
a gentle detergent and an unscented fabric softener. Granted these
products won't leave your clothing smelling quite as flowery, but they
often are much better for someone with eczema. You want to keep all
products that contain perfumes and scents away from your skin.
Water temperature while bathing is also an important consideration for
someone who has eczema. Although it's heavenly to soak in a tub filled
with hot water, it's really not helpful to any lesions on the skin.
Showering in lukewarm water often brings relief from symptoms of
eczema. Naturally you also need to be careful of the type of soap or
cleanser you are using.
We all know that exercise is essential to proper health, but it can
also play a role in eczema. Perspiration is a normal result of a good
work-out, but it can actually cause eczema to become more irritated.
This doesn't mean you should give up your fitness regime in favor of
keeping your eczema under control. You should try and exercise in a
cool environment though that is well-ventilated. This will reduce the
amount that you perspire.
You can also find relief from symptoms of eczema by wearing gloves.
Obviously this applies to those of us who have eczema on our hands.
Washing hands endlessly seems to be part of our daily routine. If you
wear gloves when doing household chores, this helps cut down not only
on how many times you need to wash your hands, but it also keeps hands
out of direct contact with dishwater, dirt and grease. Keeping hands
dry and clean will help to keep eczema under control.
Although dealing with this skin condition can sometimes feel
overwhelming, it's important to remember that there are things you can
do on a daily basis to help relieve the symptoms of eczema. Once you
understand how your own body reacts to different things, you'll be
able to avoid the irritants that cause your eczema to worsen.
