Is there a way to save queries (without going through cat | xarg or similar)? Perhaps to a file (or in the beancount file itself)?

Use the Query directive.

2018-12-31 query "myquery" "select ...."

You can define it over multiple lines, and summon it via

bean-query <filename> run myquery
