I am trying, and failing, to add a share account in EUR to my basic account in GBP. I can make it do the sums in euros but the translation to GBP fails with an error. I have an entry like:

Assets:tripods. 46 TRD {183.07 EUR} @ 0.8 GBP

Any help appreciated.

Thank you
Richard

Can you provide the full example transaction?

If there's a cost clause (e.g., {...}), the price annotation (@ ...) refers to the units of TRD.
It is an error to have different currencies for cost and price.
What you can do is convert the price on the cash side, that is, the other postings.
If you only have the inverted rate handy, you can write @ 1/0.8 GBP for convenience.
