When you install VirtualBox, it does not automatically come with the ability to run all the listed operatings systems (as I used to think ). An external file called the ISO or system image file is needed.This is the "bootable medium " referenced above .It generally has the .iso file extension. This file can be found on the website of the OS you want, and must be downloaded. This file is also used if you actually want to install the particular OS on your PC/laptop.
If you are facing the no bootable medium found issue with your VirtualBox, it is important to look at plausible explanations for the error to arise before jumping to the fixes. The problem might be a result of various different reasons. Some of them are mentioned below.
If you are booting your VM via a live CD/DVD disc, it might be that the live CD/DVD option is not selected, and thus the virtual CD/DVD drive of the VM appears to be empty. This can cause the no bootable medium found error. To fix this, proceed as the following steps indicate.

I went back to the previous step that directed to eject the external drive. After doing that, I checked in Disk Utility and was not able to see the disk. I removed and replaced the disk and it showed in Disk Utility . I unmounted it in Disk Utility and ran the command again. This time it mapped, but mapped to /users/my name/bootcamp.vmdk. When I continued to the VirtualBox, I ran into another error.
I tried the below-linked approach the other day and it worked flawlessly, and uses a free copy of WinToUSB from the virtual machine version of Windows to make the external disk bootable. This approach was flawless the first time. VMWare Fusion 12 has a free license for personal use (you just have to register an account) and is a lot less dodgy than VirtualBox, which I found to be slow and unstable by comparison.
I tried a few ways but only this worked for me:
Needed: USB flash drive 8GB or more, Windows iso, VirtualBox + Extension Pack, WinToUSB ( ) and of course the external drive. WinToUSB free works with Windows10 Home. Please read info on their site for other Windows versions.
Use Bootcamp Assistant to download the Windows Support files (you might need to click in the menu for Action).
Use Disk utility to format the USB flash drive to exFAT and the external drive to GUID HFS+ or FAT
Copy the Windows iso, Windows Support files and WinToUSB to the USB flash drive and eject.
Install VirtualBox and Extension Pack. Start VirtualBox and make a Windows10 virtual machine (VM), be sure the USB port is enabled.
Start the Windows VM. Attach the USB flash drive and the external drive that you want Windows on.
Copy the files from the flash drive to the VMs desktop.
Install WinToUSB. Open WinToUSB and select the Windows iso as source and the external drive as goal. Let WinToUSB do its work. Wait until it says 100% and then (important:) click HOME. Now copy the Windows Support files to the external drive.
Close the VM and VirtualBox and reboot. As soon as you hear the startup sound hold the Alt-key until you see the options for startup. Choose the EFI disk.
Now you have to install Windows. When finished, open the Windows Support folder and click setup to install the Bootcamp-drivers.
Done!
Regarding trackpad not working(soft click), its some sort of problem with windows 10 user accounts.
Go to user accounts, create another account (administrator), log off from your default administrator account, log in to your newly created administrator account, go to user accounts and change the default account from administrator to standard. Now log in to your default (now standard account) and bootcamp control panel in the task bar should work fine. After the trackpad, you can again change account to administrator, if needed.
even though I entered virtualbox through the sudo command as directed, when trying to create the virtualbox it was unable to access the bootcamp.vmdk file giving me a VERR_ACCESS_DENIED error as follows Failed to open a session for the virtual machine WIN 10 2.
Bootable media is a CD, DVD, USB flash drive, or other removable media that enables you to run the agent without the help of an operating system. The main purpose of bootable media is to recover an operating system that cannot start.
Virtualbox, as the name suggests, is a virtual computer. Just as a computer has CD/DVD drives, Virtualbox comes with its virtual optical drive. This is where the user has to either attach the ISO file or select a host drive containing the bootable CD/DVD.
Selecting an incorrect boot order is another reason that you may receive the error message. This happens when the virtual drive where the OS is situated is selected as a boot device, and the virtual hard disk is not selected as a bootable medium.

As I mentioned above, the VirtualBox fatal error "No bootable medium found", can appear if the GUEST OS doesn't have a valid boot configuration.* At such a case you have to repair the boot files on the virtual disk in order the VM machine to start without errors.
* Note: If the VM machine doesn't boot from the ISO file, go to VM Settings > System > Motherboard and disable EFI. (After fixing the boot configuration and if the Guest OS is UEFI then proceed to re-enable UEFI. )
