There are some packages useful for creating colored boxes: bclogo,
fancybox, framed, mdframed, ...
Another option could be TikZ. I've read somewhere (but i don't know where
now) about a beamer theme which defines new
boxes using tikz instead of beamercolorboxes.
Some time ago I used some colored boxes from

Hope it helps,

- for me, one of the question is how to have the beamer boxes also
present in beamer-article mode, haven't looked that much so far but had
not found anything. Have usually the impression that the impressive
beamer presentation become boring once in article mode...
-for another applications, without beamer, we needed boxes with captions
and dedicated counters, seems no pkg currently is offering this "out of
the box", so had to write all the code ourselves. We came then to the
question on how to make boxes floats themselves, or fixed, was really
messy for proper typeset..
