Does anyone have issues with on leash aggression with their beag? My
guy has serious problems with large breed dogs on leash, but is
terrific off leash at fenced parks with all breeds except German
Shepherds, which he will charge aggressively even without the leash
(to the best of my knowledge, he has never been attacked by one, so
I'm not sure why this would be). Would appreciate hearing from you
guys! Thanks!

Its ironic that you are posting this! I have a beag, Sally,  but she is super good on leash and off, but my Silky Terrier, Trixie, is a bit of a nut on leash but once she is off leash and/or meets the dog she if fine. I just got an email from Rob Goddard from a Small Breed meet up group that I belong to about a seminar that is going on about "On Leash Aggression", I will forward it to the group so if anyone is interested they can attend. I have emailed the company "Who's Walking WHo" to find out how many ppl will be attending the seminar and to find out if we can bring our dogs or not.

Thank you for this - yes we'd be interested in this - our rescue beag
Cooper has this issue too - for example we took him on an outing to
the Distillery this weekend after the rain and he was fine with a
cocker spaniel and several small breed dogs that we came across but he
lost it (as he often does) on a larger male dog while we were walking
home.

He seems to do this more with male dogs (all have been neutered).

This is now extending to the off leash as well - he was great at the
last Toto meet up and had no issues there but in our "regular daily"
parks where he sees the same group of dogs all the time it's coming
out more and more - he seems to want to pick a fight with these larger
dogs (german sheppards are one of his big triggers but also boxers,
american bulldogs, and large male mixed breeds with pointy ears).

I'm kind of at the end of my leash - I'm on the committee for our off
leash and don't even feel like taking him anymore. Our other dog
Penny loves off leash play and is suffering for it.

I'm certainly interested in the seminar - thanks Jennifer!

I believe Rob is a p/t instructor at Who's Walking Who - I know him -
he was very helpful at our last group class. We did group class with
10 other dogs in a very small space (Urban Dog) and Rob helped arrange
for Duke to have the space he needed to do the class and get the right
level of on-leash exposure with minimal blow ups. He has personal
experience with on leash aggression.

So our Duke has major on leash aggression issues and we've been
working on it for 1.5 years and the results have been good, but he
still needs his space on the sidewalk or small places.

FYI there is another specialist named Brenda Aloff based in Michigan -
I have been reading her book "On Dog Aggression" and she does speaking
engagements as well. I would love for a group like Canadian Dog (they
did a seminar on nutrition and holistic meds at Ryerson late last
year) to bring her in as well. She uses facial massage and hackle
massage (for lack of a better term) to calm a nervous dog.

Here is the message I got about this seminar:

DESCRIPTION:
Does your dog lunge out at some dogs while on leash? Do you feel that you don't have full control or your dog looses focus quickly? Is your dog aggressive or just afraid? This seminar is will help sort out the reason behind the reaction, and help to establish a plan of action to manage your dogs actions. Joan Weston specializes in aggression and the rehabilitation of dogs with issues. She is the staff Behaviorist for Who's Walking Who and is a leading authority on this topic. She is the author of the popular "On The Couch" column for Dogs Dogs Dogs newspaper and has studied ethology, the science of behavior, with Dr. Raymond Coppinger. Her complete bio is on our website, on our Behavioral Consultation page. For registration, if you have more than one person to attend, please register each person individually. Thanks.

SEMINAR LENGTH: 2 hours

SEMINAR FEE: $35.00

The two seminar dates are:
May 10, 2009 Sunday at 1:00 - 3:00 pm 889 Westney Road, Ajax 2 min south of Hwy 401

May 29, 2009 Friday at 6:30 - 8:30 pm 97 Main Street (at Swanwick) Community Centre 55 in Beaches

Thanks
Rob

We hired Joan for a one-on-one two years ago. Strongly recommended,
if you want to get a primer on Operant Conditioning and Classical
Counter Conditioning! $35 is a steal for a 2 hour seminar.

I just registered! I hope Cooper gets chosen as a demo dog because he
is such an odd little nut - some days he's perfect - other days he
lunges at even small dogs - I've been trying to keep a training
journal to see if anything reveals itself - triggers - something I'm
missing in the stress of dealing with the situation and nothing is
jumping off the page yet!

I've also found Feisty Fido to be very helpful as far as books go.
