Hi fellow beagleholics.
When my beagles wake up after sleeping in a really warm spot they
smell like popcorn. My shitzu never gets that smell. I told Marna
about it and she knew exactly what I meant. I was just wondering does
anyone else notice the same thing. For a while we thought we were
going crazy.

My beag smells like this too, except I think it smells like corn
chips, which is why one of his many nicknames is "The Frito Bandito".
I had a lab/terrier that had the same smell - may be a a short haired
dog thing?

The dreaded popcorn smell! Or, more appropriately, the sort of cocoa
butter / sort of hot butter / sort of maybe popcorn smell. With Jake
this turned out to be chronicially dirty ears. For fairly obvious
reasons, beagles are more prone to getting loads of random crap in
their ears. This may or may not be your issue - check with the vet to
be sure - but if it is, you might need to do a regular irrigation of
the ear canals. Jake gets a flush with a VERY dilute vinegar and warm
water solution every three days. Emma gets it too, just so she
doesn't feel left out. It has made a huge difference for Jake, so
you might want to look into it - but, as mentioned, check with your
vet first!

Am I weird that I like this popcorny/corn chippy smell? it seems to
come from my guys feet mostly - our ear smell when there is signs of
trouble is more "cheesy" and if it's really bad "stinky blue cheese".
For ear infections I flush them with the ear wash/flush from the vet's
office - however I warm it up by putting the bottle in a glass of hot
water (like warming a baby bottle) this makes for a lot less upset
from our dogs who HATE having their ears done - and no wonder -
squirting icy cold liquid in there!

i fostered a basset many years ago who had that smell, and now with my
3 beagles they all have it...seems to come from their feet, and seems
to happen when they are sleeping. weird, but cute. part of the
reason i love beagles (and hound doggies in general)

Thanks for the reply.

It's not actually from the pooches ears, it's a smell their body gives off
when they've been sleeping in the sun or wrapped up in their blankets in
their beds. It's kind of like the signal that says this side's done and now
it's time to turn over. It's not really unpleasant it's a kind of
comforting scent in a weird sort of way. Someone else mentioned it's like a
fritos smell and thinking about it that's exactly what it is. I'm so glad
that this group has formed 'cause sometimes you wonder is it just my dogs?
Looking forward to the meetup on Sunday
