From my limited knowledge of electronics, the amperage upper limit doesn't matter, the board will draw as much as it needs. The lower limit is the worry but seeing that it can work off the USB that should give you a clue. Then add the power needed for motors.

I'd say a 12V 4A (48W) power supply should cover most applications.

The LiPo charger and sitara together draw a hair under 1A. I've been using 1A 12V power supplies from amazon for a while now with success, although I have had some cheap 1A powers supplies from ebay break over time.
