I'm having the same problem.  I've got a TP-Link WN823N which is supposed to have the RTL8192cu chipset which sounds like it is supported by BBB.  I was all excited when I was able to compile hostapd from the realtek sources, but still no dice.

I am using below setup on BeagleBone Black board with Realtek USB WiFi Dongle RTL8188CUS. Same setup as my Raspberry Pi.

deb...@arm:~$ cat /etc/hostapd/hostapd.conf
interface=wlan1

ssid=mike_BBB
hw_mode=g
channel=3
wpa=2
wpa_key_mgmt=WPA-PSK
wpa_pairwise=TKIP CCMP
rsn_pairwise=CCMP
wpa_passphrase=1234567890

But this will cause below error. Any one can help this? Thanks!

Hi,

I setup ad hoc wifi with RTL8188CUS by following adafruit tutorial (step by step but adapting RTL chip version):

If you use udhcp, you need to disable some part of /opt/scripts/boot/am335x_evm.sh relative to udhcp, and you lost ethernet via USB
