bbbw expanding the debian 8.7 image on an sd card

I am trying to expand the Debian 8.7 2017-03-19 4GB SD LXQT image on an sdcard, but everytime I try to expand the partition to take up the entire sd card it breaks the operating system completely.  I follow the steps in this tutorial (http://dev.iachieved.it/iachievedit/expanding-your-beaglebone-microsd-filesystem/).  Any assistance would be helpful.  Thanks guys.
