BeagleBone not charging LiPo

I purchased a 5.2 A 7.4 V 2S 80C LiPo battery to power my BBB. when plugged in it powers up the board and every thing runs normally. However, when I plug in a 12 V 500 mA charger to the barrel jack the LiPo does not seem to charge. The CHG LED lights up, but none of the battery percent indicators light up.

Is 500mA not enough to charge the LiPo or is something else going on?

You could perform a current measurement with two voltage measurement on a resistor in series. Maybe there is something else preventing the charging?
