Do you have a way to measure it? If you hold your finger on the processor for a long time your finger will heat up leading you to think the part i getting hotter, but it isn't. Best thing is to get an actual reading.

Also, the board will heat up due to all the components being close together, so I think what you may be seeing is normal, but until we get a real temperature, it is hard to tell.

Hi,

my brand new beaglebone is heating up very fast. The processor is getting very hot after 5min and it is heating everything around. I am running the blinking led example in cloud9.

Beaglebone rev A5

Not sure if this is normal?!?!

100% accuracy is not required. It is possible that it was hit with ESD and some of the pins on the expansion header or shorted inside the processor which will cause it to heat up.

If you like, you can just request an RMA and have it looked at.

I'll try to measure the temperature, but I can't guarantee it's going to be 100% accurate. The problem is that the processor gets really hot as well as the general area around it - the P8 header, the components surrounding it, as well as the bottom side of the PCB itself. This happens for less than 5 minutes. I'm afraid to let it run for more time.

I did the temperature measurements. Prior to connecting the board with the PC the temperature was 30 degrees Celsius (room temperature :) ). After 10 minutes the temperature goes to 44-45 degrees Celsius and stays this way. Only the OS runs (the latest version of Angstrom) without any external devices being connected. I am not certain that this is the normal operating temperature.

That is indeed normal. Just don't hold your finger on it for a long time! This is a high end embedded processor and has a lot of stuff inside, so it will run a lot hotter than a micro controller would.

44-45 degrees for a CPU running at 720MHz?? What are all these
messages about? It's even pretty good temperature for a such fast
running chip!

I have worked with 8-bit pic and 32-bit cortex m3 and they have never warmed up, not even a little bit. That's why I was so surprised.

Different world! These are closer to what you find in an IPAD than a PIC. They run at 720MHZ and actually have multiple cores in them that by themselves will run a PIC into the ground. Plus you have other parts on the board that generate heat, such as the DDR2 memory, the USB to serial, Ethernet PHY, USB hub, and more. It all adds up.
