UPDATES ON RANKED CHOICE VOTING IN ARIZONA
BILLS INTRODUCED TO LEGISLATURE:
REPUBLICAN Rep Walter Blackman from LD6, Sponsored / introduced HB2693 to the AZ
legislature that would allow use of Ranked Choice Voting (RCV) in municipal and county elections
Ranked Choice Voting in Municipal elections saves money.
●
Saves Taxpayer Money - Eliminates the need for additional run-off elections when the
leading candidate earns less than 50% of the
vote.
●
Guarantees Majority Winner - The candidate who wins the election is the one the majority
of people actually wanted.
●
Free market Competition – We get better choices
●
Encourages Civility - Candidates appeal to their opponent's supporters for second
place
votes.
●
Eliminates the "spoiler effect" argument against non-establishment, third party, and
independent candidates.
○
In three-or-more way races, voters often face a choice: vote for who they want and
risk electing the candidate they like the least, or vote for the candidate they think is
more likely to win. This is the “spoiler effect” and it artificially suppresses the
support of third party candidates.
○
Ranked Choice Voting solves that concern by allowing voters to vote their
conscience. If their candidate fails to make it past the first round, their second place
vote is counted instead.
