There are many good firearms bills that have been introduced so far, and as usual, are unlikely to get hearings.
There are 2 in particular I would like us to work on together to see if we can change that: HB2512 and HB2214. First step: I’m asking you to take 5 minutes or less to contact Rep. Steve Montenegro, Speaker of the House and urge him to assign these two bills to a committee. If this happens, I’ll reach out again and ask for calls to the committee chair.
Why these 2 bills?
HB2512 firearms transfers; offenses; domestic violence Rep. Lydia Hernandez (D - 24)
I have been working for the past several months with others in Tucson on the role of firearms in domestic violence and the challenges faced in removing firearms from perpetrators of domestic violence. This bill provides clear pathways toward this goal while respecting the due process rights of the firearm owner.
HB2214 failure to secure weapons: minor Rep, Nancy Gutierrez (D-18)
Also known as “Christian’s Law” to encourage safe storage of weapons. Designed to save children’s lives by reducing access to firearms, the leading factor in child firearm deaths in Arizona. Child firearm deaths have increased 13.4% from 2022.
As Speaker of the House, he reports to all of us. You do not have to be in his district to call him! If you DO live in LD29, be sure to identify yourself as a voter in his district.
Please SHARE THIS EMAIL with friends, family, others who would have interest in knowing about these bills. It is only once they receive hearings that we have an opportunity to make the public more widely aware of them and the general opposition to them among the current majority in our legislature!
Thank you!
