According to several reports (VeloNews, Reuters), Pontoni
sprinter for the line, lost control of his rear wheel, and
crashed at the finish line.

Of interest is why the Dutch Duo finished so far down --
perhaps it was the icy conditions, or perhaps the flu was making
the rounds of the Rabobank squad...

Henrik Djernis was riding down the finishing straight saluting the
crowd a little bit too early. Pontoni was coming up fast behind and
tried to come under Djernis's arms to steal the 3rd place, but tried
so hard that he lost control a few yards short and crashed over the
line.

Ehehe sounds like there is a story here!

Interesting, no Groendal (erk.. know I botched that one:-(, or Van der
Poel.

On another note, I wonder what ever became of Bramati, after his one
fantastic season. I guess, given this is RBR, that drugs is the
forgone conclusion amongst half the people reading this, and something
else for the rest.. Gentlemen, start your flames;-)

Grazie, Roger,

Van der Poel missed or screwed up his start. Groenendaal led for a lap
but couldn't stay with the group behind de Clercq. After the rest of
the season, looks like a dose of the flu.

Bramati has picked up toxoplasmosis (passed on through animal faeces,
probably, which is an endemic problem when half your races are in
public parks) and packed up racing at the end of December. He started
riding again a couple of weeks ago, but was well off the pace at the
Worlds.

Doping story of the day: after having (along with Pontoni) gone
through an extra pre-race dope test, Danny de Bie got selected for one
of the random post-race tests. He said that it was about time he
started doing the lottery ...
