.bash_history file unexpectedly truncated

Hello,
I've set my HISTSIZE and HISTFILESIZE to 200000 since ten years or so, and had tens
of thousands of lines in .bash_history.
Today I noticed the .bash_history file is truncated to 380 lines from many years ago
+ my commands from yesterday.
The variables are unchanged, I often use tmux, I often update, I updated yesterday,
Debian 11.1.
Any idea how this happened? It never happened before.
