Hi,
I looked into the Squamish By-laws earlier this year in
researching by-laws in the different communities.
I'm working on changing Lions Bay's chicken by-law.
What I found:
Bylaw no 1315
"District of Squamish Animal Control, Dog Pound and licence Bylaw No.1315,
1994"
Section:3.0, 3.1, 4.0, 5.0, 6.0, 12.0, 12.1, 12.2, 12.3, 12.4, 13.0
All sections above deal with Dogs, kennel licensing, Cats and "cattle"
which include-any horse, mule, swine, sheep goat, cow or other animal of the
bovine species.
No mention of chickens or poultry.
No by-law has been made to not permit chickens and they do not fall under
the definition of "cattle". Chickens are kept in Squamish, I think I've
seen them on some of the small mini farms in Squamish.
I phoned one of the Veterinary clinics in Squamish and the
receptionist who works and lives in Squamish has chickens herself. Look her up
to confirm.
Also check the noise by-laws about roosters? I don't think I came across
anything, only in Whistler's noise by-law.
Remember, if you go ahead and get chickens, please be "bear smart" about
them. I believe Squamish is trying to become a "bear smart" community. Electric
fencing is the way to go, confirmed by the Squamish conservation officer and the
LB Bear Smart program. They believe that they are bear attractants. - Bears are
opportunists and once they or raccoons attracted to them they are difficult
to protect. Squamish and many other communities are becoming attractive area for
bears to visit and find food in, especially the as the human population grows.
Keep them safe and lesson the reason for your neighbour to complain.
Good luck,
Tina
