Synopsis

With software development recognised as an essential digital skill in today’s increasingly digital world, today’s aspiring software developers need to be much more than coders.  They need to understand the business context, the client, the process of design, the user experience, the end-to-end development process, project management and, importantly, have an understanding of development methodologies and approaches, security techniques and even relevant legislation.  But all of this knowledge must be underpinned by key employment skills such as communication and collaboration, together with the ability to demonstrate professional behaviours.

About the presenters

Bernie Fishpool is a consultant subject matter expert and author of vocational computing and IT texts and learning resources, who taught programming, systems analysis, project management and personal skills development in post-16 education for more than 20 years.  She is currently working for BCS on the development of teaching and learning content to support the new Digital T Level programme for Software Developers, particularly in relation to employability and work readiness.  Bernie led on the development of the AQA Tech Levels in Computing/IT (including the UK’s first Cyber Security qualification) between 2014 and 2016 and has written content and assessment materials for Trailblazer Apprenticeships and the new ESDQ.

Mark Fishpool has taught various computing subjects from Year 7 to degree level in schools and colleges since the age of 19. He has lead-written nationally recognised BTEC and AQA computing qualifications and was head of school for computing/CoVE manager at Gloucestershire College for over seven successful years before returning to the commercial sector, specialising as a senior full-stack developer. He has recently come back to training and education as senior technical learning consultant (Cyber) at QA Ltd, specialising in Python, C and Linux. Somehow in the middle of this 30-year career he’s also written 11 books, mostly with his wife, Bernie.
