Hi, PsychMinded!

Hope everyone is doing well. Just wanted to share some upcoming events and opportunities:
  1. "Action Collaborative on Countering the U.S. Opioid Epidemic" Public Virtual Symposium, Thursday, 5/21, 8:30 AM-5 PM
    • Description: The National Academy of Medicine (NAM), established the Action Collaborative on Countering the U.S. Opioid Epidemic in 2018 as a two-year, public-private partnership to foster greater coordination and collective action across the health system and beyond in addressing the opioid addiction crisis. The Action Collaborative uses a systems approach to convene and catalyze public, private, and non-profit stakeholders to develop, curate, and disseminate multi-sector solutions designed to reduce opioid misuse, and improve outcomes for individuals, families, and communities affected by the opioid crisis. During this virtual symposium, Action Collaborative members and invited expert speakers will address among the highest-priority elements of the nation’s response to the opioid epidemic, particularly in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic. Over the course of the day, participants will learn about the most promising opportunities to achieve a health system that is better prepared to prevent, treat, and manage substance use disorders.

  2. "Awakenings" Zoom Screening: Thursday, 5/21, 6-8 PM
    • DescriptionCo-hosted by BCM Student Interest Group in Neurology (SIGN), BCM PsychMinded, & UT Houston McGovern Student Interest Group in Neurology & Psychiatry (SIGN-P). Awakenings is a 1990 film based on the memoir of Oxford-educated neurologist-author Oliver Sacks, called the "poet laureate of medicine" by the New York Times, and his experience treating catatonic survivors of the 1920s encephalitis lethargica epidemic with levodopa in the 1960s in the Bronx. Demonstrating the power of both modern science and the human touch in patient care, this Best Picture nominee stars Robin Williams as Dr. Sacks, led to a Best Actor nomination for Robert De Niro as one of Sacks' "awakened" patients, and is popularly referenced by BCM's Dean Goodman in the M1 Neurology course each spring.

A group of BCM Psychiatry residents from various levels of training have graciously agreed to join us for the panel via Zoom on Thursday, May 28 at 6:30 p.m. Attendees will have the opportunity to ask any and all psych-related questions to folks that were med students not too long ago. 4. Research Opportunities
    • Description: Earlier this month, PsychMinded released a Google Sheet for students to indicate their interest in psychiatry research. After discussion among the research faculty, it was decided that it would be easiest to share a list of research faculty for students to contact. It is recommended that students identify a specific timeframe that they anticipate being available and how much time they can dedicate over that timeframe.
    • Research faculty list: See attachment. For geriatrics, cultural, and LGBTQ-related research, students are welcome to contact Dr. Asghar-Ali, who is also our PsychMinded faculty sponsor.
