AAP Medical Student Essay Contest on the Art of Communication in Psychiatry
Hello everyone!
It is time for the 2019 AAP Medical Student Essay Contest on The Art of Communication in Psychiatry!
The selected winner of the creative writing contest will receive up to $1,000 for reimbursement of travel expenses to attend the 2019 AAP Annual Meeting in Boston, Massachusetts, September 4-7, 2019 where s/he will present the essay. The theme is: The Art of Communication in Psychiatry: Connecting with the Patient.
Please see below for specific details and forward this email to those in your organization that can get the word out to the students! Last year we had 19 submissions, and I am hoping for even more this year!!
Submission Requirements
The contest is open to any student who is both currently enrolled in an accredited medical school in the United States or Canada and will be enrolled at the time of the Annual Meeting. The work must be an original, unpublished essay of 2,000 words or less. Essays should be submitted electronically as a *.doc, *.txt or *.rtf email attachment to hco...@uw.edu and should include a cover page with the following information:
- Student’s Name
- Name of Medical School where enrolled and year in school
- Mailing Address, Phone Number, Email Address
Selection Criteria
Judges will be blinded to the participant and affiliated medical school. Judging will be based on originality, uniqueness, flow of thought, and appropriateness to the theme. The winner must be able to attend the Association for Academic Psychiatry Annual Meeting as indicated above.

Summer Institute for Medical Students- Hazelden Betty Ford Program
This one week summer program in California and Minnesota teaches medical students the biopsychosocial aspects of addiction as a disease, evidence-based and holistic
care, and the Twelve Step Recovery Model. Deadline: March 1st.
APA Travel Scholarship to IPS Meeting
This scholarship supports travel and related costs for racial/ethnic and underrepresented minority medical students considering a career in psychiatry to attend either the Annual Meeting in May or the IPS: The Mental Health Services Conference in October. Medical Student Elective in HIV Psychiatry
The Medical Student Elective in HIV Psychiatry provides an opportunity for fourth year medical students (particularly from racial and ethnic minority backgrounds) to participate in a month-long clinical or research elective in HIV psychiatry at one of several prominent universities across the country. Deadline: April 1st
APA Summer Mentoring Program
This mentorship program pairs mentees with mentors based on interests of the medical student, practice setting (i.e. research or clinical), geographic proximity of the mentor and menthe. The focus of the program is on serving minority populations and on mental health care disparities. Deadline: March 1st
Externship in Addiction Psychiatry
This one-month summer program
is intended to identify racial/ethnic minority medical students who have an interest in psychiatric services related to substance
use disorders, prevention and early
