Sylvia Muzquiz-Drummond, MD (Medical Director of Mental Health Services for the Harris Center for Mental Health & IDD) and Joseph V Penn, MD (Director of Mental Health Services for UTMB Correctional Managed Care) will discuss improving access to mental health care for currently and formerly incarcerated individuals in Texas, where the largest psychiatric provider is the Harris County Jail.

 

  1. LIFT (Learning to Identify & Fight Human Trafficking) Training Seminar

This training event led by the Physicians Against the Trafficking of Humans (PATH) is an interactive lecture-based seminar on understanding human trafficking, and more importantly on how to address this issue in healthcare settings. Human trafficking is a challenge both globally and locally, but Houston has one of the highest human trafficking rates for several reasons including geographic location and economic ties. At the conclusion of the lecture, we will have a guest Q&A panel consisting of various community partners who work with trafficked survivors.

  • Who: medical professionals (physicians, nurses, social workers, public health professionals) at all levels of training are welcomed. CME credit available at no cost.
  • What: The LIFT series highlights the scope and reach of human trafficking in the U.S., equips participants to recognize the signs of trafficking and provides connections to trustworthy local resources.  Describe scope and prevalence of the problem of sex trafficking in the United States.
  • Where: Baylor College of Medicine, 1 Baylor Plaza, Room M112, Houston, TX 77030. (Closest parking garages are Garages 4, 6, 7, and 10.) Parking not included in free registration.

 

  1. Association for Academic Psychiatry (AAP) Medical Student Creative Writing Essay Award

Theme: The Art of Communication in Psychiatry – Connecting with the Patient

Deadline: Jun 1, 2019

Open to any student currently enrolled in an accredited medical school in the US or Canada through September 2019. Must be an original, unpublished essay up to 2,000 words. Winner will receive up to $1,000 for travel expenses to present the essay at the 2019 AAP Annual Meeting in Boston from Sep 4-7, 2019. See submission requirements & selection criteria here!

PsychSIGN, APA’s med student branch, coordinates year-round opportunities for students and is currently accepting applications for national and regional leadership positions. Find out more on their website!
