Hey, PsychMinded members! Here are some events and opportunities to keep an eye out for in the upcoming month:

  1. BCM HeARTS in Medicine is partnering with BCM PsychMinded and BCM Student Interest Group in Neurology (SIGN) on a new service initiative! We will be volunteering with persons with dementia at the BakerRipley Dementia Day Center (formerly Sheltering Arms Senior Services). Teams of 2-4 will lead individuals in 1-hour sessions using TimeSlips, a storytelling technique that can be both cognitively stimulating and emotionally therapeutic. Volunteers are asked to commit ~10 hrs (only 5 in-person, scheduling flexible) from Oct-Dec. Please sign up on this form by Sat Oct 5 if interested! https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLScCWdHG3BMKJ0nUASxpxqL0Kk7xdkd5JJaZ031HcnA32YJMtA/viewform Anyone is welcome to volunteer--you do not need to be in SLP! However, if you are already doing SLP and would like this to count as your site, please also sign up for BakerRipley Dementia Day Center/Sheltering Arms as your SLP site by Sat Oct 5! The program is also seeking 1-2 MS1s to coordinate the program as MS2s enter clerkships. Email ckw...@bcm.edu for any questions on this project or SLP in general!
  2. If you are still deciding on an SLP site and are interested in something with a focus on mental health, please consider The Montrose Center (contact me if you have any questions) or NAMI (contact Raj Reddy)! You can learn more about the sites here (https://docs.google.com/document/d/18EcZpRvIlWNUYK7Cl8FfY99Lx34tdNmwfrN0eNOSIHw/edit?usp=sharing), but please make sure to sign up through the site-commit form by Saturday, 10/5!
  3. PsychMinded and GOBIG are joining forces to host a talk on reproductive psychiatry by Dr. Valentine on Monday, 10/7 from 12-1PM in Kleburg Auditorium. Food will be provided with RSVP (be on the lookout for a Facebook event), and this event gives you SLP credit!
  4. We are looking for two more volunteers for The Houston Walk for Mental Health Awareness on Saturday, 10/12 from 7:30-8:30AM! Volunteers will be helping with the Soji ceremony that will take place before the walk, which is $30/person. Please let Rachel Pacilio know if you are interested, and she will give you the details.
  5. The annual BCM Wellness 5k is back! We've had a psychiatry team participate for the last two years, and it's time to keep the tradition going. The race is on Saturday, 10/12, in the TMC and will be a great way to get together and get healthy with the BCM community. Proceeds from the event go to various community health initiatives organized by BCM students. After the race, there will be a variety of wellness-promoting vendors and booth set up outside the TMC Commons. All are welcome! There will be a 1k Fun Run (free of charge) for kids under the age of 10. For parents who want to participate in the 5k race, there will also be child care stations staffed by BCM volunteers. To join our team or find more details about the event, visit https://bcm5k.itsyourrace.com/register/JoinTeam.aspx?ohid=1984730. Click the "about" link to see the general event information. Team name: Dream (Interpretation) Team. Team password: bcmpsych. Please reach out to dma...@bcm.edu with any additional questions. Hope to see you there!
  6. PsychMinded's annual fall picnic/potluck will be from 12-2PM on Saturday, 10/12 at Hermann Park--be on the lookout for a Facebook event. Food will be provided, but feel free to also bring a small contribution!
Happy Fall,
Amber
