So we have a few answers to the ducky quiz so best I respond to the groundswell of proclamations.
The bird is a Common Goldeneye and I believe that it is a first year male.
Reasons: long, sloping forehead unlike vertical profile for Barrow's Goldeneye. Large, somewhat lengthy bill, very thick and bulky unlike the shorter, stubby bill of Barrow's. The lack of yellow near the tip is typical of males as they age into the winter and lose the yellowish ring of youth. A female should have some yellow by now. There appears to be some white scapulars molting in which are a male trait. I am not sure that the few white feathers close to the bill are actually part of the future white dollar mark. I don't see any hints of white where that mark will appear, but in some individuals, these feathers will molt in quite late. And for a completely subjective thought, I find common goldeneyes are just not as "pretty" as Barrow's. They are a bit on the homely side.
So those are my thoughts about what it would take to get 3 points for this quiz.
Now as for Jim's puzzler........

It seems that we have not played with a quiz bird in a while. So I attach this species which should be a slam dunk.

PS on the goldeneye. The eye is somewhat dark and not a bright yellow, indicating a sub-adult age.
