A couple of days ago, a friend sent me photos of a Red-tailed Hawk eating a Eurasian Collared Dove. This adds to the photos I have seen of a Merlin feeding on this protein source.  Has anyone else seen predation on this dove by our native raptors?

I have not seen it, and am unlikely to do so. While each has been seen, neither dove nor hawk are common in the forested area where I live. On the other hand, I suspect that it happens often on the Creston Flats where both birds abound.

I will, however, wander off topic and comment on this week's confrontation between ospreys and eagle. As the picture below shows, after stealing an osprey’s fish, the eagle chose a defensible position on a breakwater. Here it could tuck the fish between logs where is was not easily snatched. Further, it had its back to pilings to prevent an attack from behind. This was a smart eagle. I posted about it this morning as,

Great shot showing species interactions. A little kleptoparasitism by the eagle.
