I have been looking for different ways to depict Trumpeter Swans. Here is a more dreamy view of a juvenile.

The style you used is known as high-key lighting, and (according to Wikipedia) it aims to reduce the lighting ratio present in the scene.

Ok, I will also try my hand at delivering a high-key trumpeter by reprocessing of a picture I took about three years ago.

That is a beauty Alistair. I don't have any wing flaps that are quite so dramatic. Nicely depicted. Here is another of my high key intiatives.

Would this work on a Grey bird like Sarus Crane (Grus antigone).

I suspect it would Anand, depending upon what you have for other tones in the photo and what tone of gray you are dealing with.

Nice pictures guys. I will have to see if I can do that technique with Aperture-my Mac method of processing.

Hi Anand. Is this your first post to this group? If so-welcome. For those that might not know, Anand is a great photographer and conservationist from India. If you get the technique to work on a Sarus please post it here.

Anand,

Would this work on a Grey bird like Sarus Crane (Grus antigone).

Why not?

I tried it on a Sarus relative and its sort of OK (first picture).

However for this particular image, I prefer the look of low-key lighting to emphasize those transfixing eyes straddling a head covered in dried blood (second picture). Very sinister. What can I say: Thus, quoth the crane.

It’s all just a matter of controlling relative exposure.

Maybe I am having too much fun with this Sandhill Crane and should seek redemption in the purity of Rick’s high-key trumpeters.

Yes, in a way. Been lurking in the background as this
group is for BC birds.

Would try it out and share.

Not a lot of traffic here so don.'t worry. Rules are fairly lax.

The shadowy world of the vulture - very neat with the bright eyes. I have continued with the high key high jinx. Much of silent swan identification has centred around the bills. My depiction is to simply show the essence of the dark parts. Note the differing shape of the border between the bill and the forehead. Tundra is supposed to be roundish and Trumpeter pointed. All of these birds are Trumpeters.

Being a Luddite in the Post Processing bt not so in general Phtography,
thought would first try my hand at High Key Shooting alongwith what I
would normally do.

This one was exposed high without overexposing the bird.

Critique and advice Welcome

Lovely shot Anand. I think the degree to which dark areas are given prominence while lighter components are diminished is a matter of personal preference. How much of the bird do you want to see and how do the visible components transmit the feeling you wish to convey?  In my swan shots, I wished to emphasize the beaks and some other components while eliminating much of the body mass. But that was only one interpretation of the components that I was working with.

With the tern, it might be fun to see how much of the whiter elements you can eliminate to see what the darker tones say about the bird.

Beautiful shot. Can you lighten the shadows to gain any more detail around the eye ?
