I have been looking for different ways to depict Trumpeter Swans. Here is a more dreamy view of a juvenile.
That is a beauty Alistair. I don't have any wing flaps that are quite so dramatic. Nicely depicted. Here is another of my high key intiatives.

Would this work on a Grey bird like Sarus Crane (Grus antigone).
The shadowy world of the vulture - very neat with the bright eyes. I have continued with the high key high jinx. Much of silent swan identification has centred around the bills. My depiction is to simply show the essence of the dark parts. Note the differing shape of the border between the bill and the forehead. Tundra is supposed to be roundish and Trumpeter pointed. All of these birds are Trumpeters.

Lovely shot Anand. I think the degree to which dark areas are given prominence while lighter components are diminished is a matter of personal preference. How much of the bird do you want to see and how do the visible components transmit the feeling you wish to convey? In my swan shots, I wished to emphasize the beaks and some other components while eliminating much of the body mass. But that was only one interpretation of the components that I was working with.
With the tern, it might be fun to see how much of the whiter elements you can eliminate to see what the darker tones say about the bird.

Beautiful shot. Can you lighten the shadows to gain any more detail around the eye ?
