Thanks Ferne. I will stay with Glaucous-winged Gull. Note that 5the primaries are not very dark and from your original picture, the pink legs, massive bill and dark eye and general heft of the bird all suggest Glaucous-winged.

Okay, Rick.  Thanks for your quick i.d.  Such a complicated bunch of critters.  The chances of my  ever learning  gulls properly is zip considering I don't see any most of the year and they're more than average complications (too put it mildly).  But after you're quick response I did locate more useful detailed i.d. info on the net than I knew existed OR my general bird books could possibly supply. Which for the time being has made me less frustrated with gulls in general. I would never have settled on Glaucous-winged.  Too fixated on the orange dot and the dingy pink legs.😀

Gulls vary considerably, depending upon the species, and a number of them hybridize which adds to the challenges.Dpn't feel badly about being frustrated by them.
