Very little terminal band on the tail feathers Derek, so I will go with Dusky Grouse (and you are out of Sooty range).  Nice capture.

I happened upon a bunch of Dusky grouse in full breeding.

This fellow would puff himself up to try to impress the two females high up trees, showing all his colors. He would leap into the air thrashing his wings making a beating sound. Other males in the vicinity would respond, and the girls would get louder with their calls.
