I'm very sad to hear this news. All the years of hard work and funding
shot down by what seems like an odd new requirement. BC Service Card??
What does a Service Card have to do with Education? Isn't the Service
Card the new Care Card.

When was this requirement announced?
What does "integrate" mean?
Do the new systems from commercial vendors already support this or are
those systems going to cost more also?

That sucks. It was nice to see that someone was trying to find a sustainable SIS that not only fit the public education system but was catered to our system in BC. It is so sad, especially when the program was being well received.

The article never explained why it would cost millions of dollars to have this Service Card integrated. Could someone let me know? Can't there be any way around it?

From Seema.

Hi Seema,

Yes, it would be good to have more information about the BC requirements. I'm currently finishing the coding for the Alberta Education system (PASI) communication with local SIS's for several Alberta schools.  This system is much more complicated than the Saskatchewan Education system (SDS), so I would be very much surprised if the BC system as such would have nearly as many requirements as they do (and the Alberta Ed folks have been working on this for several years to replace their very old legacy system (fixed length student, enrollment, etc records)).

I have also done some work for Dadavan (Outcomes software) on the Quebec provincial systems, and it is also quite straightforward, albeit with language and cultural data requirements.

So, if anyone has a link to the BC requirements, I would be nice to take a look.

Thanks,

Les Richardson

The following page has links to the RFP, SIS requirements and Gartner's full report:

http://www.bcedplan.ca/actions/technology/request-for-proposals.php

In the SIS RFP Information document, Appendix G1.8 Identity Management does mention the BC Services Card:

Note: The Government Authentication Standards will be modified in the near future to make explicit the
inclusion of the BC Services Card. The BC Services Card will provide secure access to government
services. Information about the BC Services Card is available at www.gov.bc.ca/bcservicescard.

Hi Warren,

This stuff is quite old. Is there anything newer (ie. late 2013, early 2014) that is describing what is happening?

Obviously schools and school divisions can't just sit on their hands while the Gov't decides on the 'One Great SIS' to rule over all.

Thanks,
