Thanks a lot for this! That is going to be a popular change around here.
Editing fontconfig.properties didn't immediately work for me because the
shipped compiled Ubuntu.bfc file was taking precedence. After I deleted
that file it started reading the properties file.
Your original fontconfig.properties seems to be quite a bit different
from mine (which comes from sun-java6 6.35-1). Besides that, your XFLDs
for the MS fonts are different from the ones shipped in the defoma hints
file included with msttcorefonts, but I don't think that matters since
you're providing the filenames as well.
I'm attaching the patch I applied to fontconfig.properties here, in case
anyone finds it helpful.
