BCCHC Community!

IN THIS EMAIL

1 – Community De-Escalation Trainings

2 – More info on Community Safety and Election Protection

We had a small and powerful emergency preparedness meeting last night. We really discussed the concerns people have about the flu and COVID interacting in a way that can further disrupt our lives with stronger public health orders. People were also very honest about their concerns around election related violence. We will not have an emergency preparedness meeting next Wednesday. We are hoping that things will be calm. We still encourage people to have a list of who they will reach out to if they need help, whether it is being tested positive for COVID and needing help with shopping, to any other possible issues. As always, “Plan for the worst, and work hard for the best.”

Please note that there are TWO De-escalation trainings. One this afternoon and one on Monday, November 2 at 3PM. There is a training from people in the east coast tomorrow as well. https://www.shutdowndc.org/calendar/de-escalation-training

General announcements will come later.

1 – Community De-Escalation Trainings

Quick Description: (These trainings will be capped at 40 at request of the trainer, we will see if we can record them for sharing)

This training is to support people becoming community responders. How do community people respond to situations of community distress without needing to call police or paramedics? We will take an introductory look at skills and tools that provide an alternative to law enforcement, providing some capacity building, and providing tools to support community members. We will discuss things that can be kept in your trunk or bag to be of support to community members struggling. Self-care, awareness, and debriefing will be included. We may not have a way to practice the scenarios as we would in-person.

Given the state of the world we still need to share information on first aid, de-escalation in relation to feelings of self-harm, and other issues.

Safety Checklist for November

bit.ly/UpSafetyChecklist

The scenarios anticipated by this document are not the apocalypse or the purge. This is about pre-emptive action to take care of yourself in what will undoubtedly be an unpredictable and chaotic time.

This document is meant to help you take some precaution and map how you plan on acting, engaging, or abstaining from action in November. Remember: each of us has a different risk model, meaning that we each know best what we can or can’t handle, have capacity for, or expertise on.

Your safety plan should serve you and people you care about. Not having some of the items of this list does not reflect a lack of preparation -- you can best assess. A recommended way to use this list is to make a copy, share with friends, and check the things you feel/have, and then make a plan to get anything missing.

The information here is relevant to New York, but feel free i to adapt and share in other cities.

Questions you should answer prior to Nov 3:

  • What concerns you about the elections, if anything?
    • Is it the threat of white supremacist militants?
    • The pandemic and possible protests?
    • Not being able to get food/supplies?
  • Will you be going to a protest, or many protests?
    • If so, what level of action will you be engaging in?
    • Have you looked at de escalation and safety resources?
    • Skip down to The Streets resources.
  • Will you be staying at home, or staying with a friend?
  • Maybe your anxieties are more political, existential?
  • Or maybe you’re ready to organize?
    • Do you have a pod?
    • Do you have resources you’ll be sharing or want to share?
    •
      • Money, food, etc?
    • Are you connected to community mutual aid networks or protest funds?
      • Do you have their contact info ready to share?
    • Do you have your neighbor’s contact info?
    • Have you cleaned up your digital security, made space on your phone and computer?
    • NYC Action Fund: pays protest bail.

Self Care Resources:

Questions you should answer prior to Nov 3:

  • Maybe your anxieties are more political, existential?
    • How will you take care of your mental health this month?

    • Think about limiting your news and social media intake:
      • Maybe to an hour a day? An hour in the morning and evening?
    • Find 10 minutes of time at least to spend on something that feels good.
    • Try journaling or writing about how you’re processing this moment.

The Governor will present at 1PM this afternoon to give us an update on COVID 19. It is ultimately up to us to end this. For those who want to encourage people to wear masks please join our #IMaskUp campaign by posting a selfie with the tag #IMaskUp and tag @bcchcnm on Instagram and @generationjustice on Instagram and @genjustice on Twitter. On FB you can also post them on our wall or tag both groups. There have been studies and news stories saying that the next 6 to 12 weeks may be the most challenging of the pandemic. If that is true, hopefully we do not have another large wave after that.

It is clear that for many people fear of the pandemic is declining. Whether it is because of “pandemic fatigue” or “quarantine fatigue” it will be important that we encourage and support people to stay safe. With 220,000 SARS-CoV-2 deaths we have a lot to work on. It doesn’t seem that we have collectively taken time to mourn the way the US mourns after events such as Katrina or 9/11. Take a moment to take care and center yourself and re-energize yourself to keep at this. Hospitals are currently overflowing so we can support our medical service providers by staying healthy.

These times require us to prepare for the worst and work for the best. There is a great deal of work ahead of us for a better world. I’m happy to be walking this path with you all.

2 – Emergency Preparedness, Wednesday, October 21 at 5PM

We will continue discussing emergency preparedness. One of our BCCHC Board Members will present from personal experience.

Learning Lesson in Communities Finding Resilience Through Tragedy

Jessica Osenbrügge will share some learning lessons about communities coming together during times of emergency and tragedy, and how resilience and compassion is an asset in helping one another. Based on experiencing September 11th in New York City and Hurricane Sandy, Jessica will share her experience and some considerations that may support our communities during this unique and challenging time.

I will review things I have been learning on community based preparedness from courses and online resources.

4 – Flu Shots and CABQ

Below is the link to the City’s flu shot clinic finder. People can filter by insurance status, date/time, and also age that is able to get vaccinated at the clinic.

www.cabq.gov/flu

The City has been working closely this year with the NM Immunization Coalition and other local partners to help get the word out about the importance of getting your flu shot. If any of community organization wants to hold a flu clinic, but are in need of a provider to administer the vaccine the City can help connect them to resources. Also, they have the ability to get flyers or other materials printed up in any language, if needed.
