Request for Solidarity from UNM Grad Students.

If you don’t know there is an organizing effort going on at UNM. Often at public health meetings people ask, “where are the business leaders.” I think that’s very appropriate at times. I have yet to hear many people ask, “where are the labor leaders?” or “where are the workers?” If we are going to reach health equity we will need to remember that union participation impacts health at a population level. The more people covered by unions the better health outcomes are. It is why something like the PRO Act (link for informational purposes https://passtheproact.org/ ) may be an important piece of legislation for the public health community to get behind. So UNM UGW asked that we share the following information. Participate if you feel so inclined. 😊

Hello!

We hope to see you for our digital Rally for Recognition: A Week of Union Action, which begins on Monday, April 19th at 6 pm. If you are able to share information about our events on your social media, I’ve included a social media toolkit with preformatted images and text you can use. Labor conditions for graduate students are pretty bad and it’s legitimized by at ‘career trajectory’ narrative which maintains that graduate students will get high paying jobs after graduation and that is the only reason to attend grad school. This is not true. Many of us will struggle to find any job at all, much less high paying jobs. Furthermore, present labor conditions for graduate students perpetuate the use of an economic calculus for grad students entering the job market. Compound interest on tens of thousands of dollars in student loans has been collecting interest without payment for years, and one finds oneself facing an uncertain job-market with no savings, no security, and huge bills.

With a living wage, adequate healthcare, family support, and immigration support, grad students will be in a better position to choose jobs that contribute to collective well-being. Everyone deserves to be able be able to afford their lives. UNM UGW stands in solidarity with all labor and wellbeing struggles to secure a better world. A society that pays all its laborers better is a better society, period.

Join us this Monday, April 19th, and throughout the week. See you there.
