1 – Statement on the Murder Spree in Georgia

The Bernalillo County Community Health Council has a wide variety of emotions around the murder spree in Georgia yesterday. We know there are no perfect words for what we need to process. What is important is to recognize that misogyny is clearly an important factor. It seems very hard to deny that racism and xenophobia against Asians was central to this as well. Stigma against sex workers is present in this as all of the things mentioned have been for a very long time. It is important that we all educate ourselves on all of these factors before asking someone to educate us on their pain.

We will likely learn details. What we know is that there has been a huge increase in hate crimes against the Asian community. We need to stand in solidarity and support community led work for solutions and safety. Please check in on friends and family that may be impacted by this situation. Public health solutions that heal and empower require all of us and are possible. We can create a better world together. Things will change when you are involved. The Council remains committed to working with community to achieve health equity which includes safer and more inclusive communities.

2 – API Community Space NAPAWFABQ, Tonight 7PM

All Asian women deserve and are worthy of respect, dignity and protection.

We stand in solidarity with sex workers and all those targeted by gendered racial violence and racialized sexual violence.  We are devastated at the violence in Georgia that has taken eight lives, six of whom were Asian women.

We will be holding space tonight, Wednesday, March 17th at 7:00PM MT - to grieve, to be together.  This will be for self-identifying Asian Pacific Islander (API) folks.  Please feel free to join as you are able, or connect with us offline in any capacity you may have.
