Assalaamu Alaikum Ali, Adrian and Sarah!
I'm contacting you because after talking to the EC at tonight's meeting, we decided that we are opening up the student liaison position at Berkeley Masjid to include students from both Zaytuna and BCC.
The expanded role of the student liaison is to mobilize the rich and diverse Muslim student population in Berkeley from our 3 main institutions: UC Berkeley, Zaytuna College, and Berkeley City College. This liaison will be responsible for communicating with the leadership in each of these institutions, to create a place for students at the masjid, and to mobilize our large student populace in helping to run the day to day affairs of the masjid. This includes a weekly executive committee meeting, and an additional 2-5 hours per week outside of the meeting to organize programs at the masjid as well as fundraising efforts, and to help the masjid grow and develop in its infant stages. Insha'Allah, we hope that expanding the role of the liaison to reach out to these 3 institutions will create more cohesion in the student community and create a larger and more diverse task force of students for the masjid.
It's a really exciting job in which I've had the opportunity to interact with elders, young professionals, youth, and people from various backgrounds within the Berkeley community. And it's a position that has sooo much potential if there's someone out there who has the time, energy, and talent to really focus on the masjid's development in this early stage. My time as liaison is quickly coming to an end, and I'm eager to find a replacement that I can train before I peace out of this place iA. Our new liaison would begin training asap and over the summer, and continue their term in the 2012-2013 academic year. They must be enrolled as a student for the 2012-2013 academic school year. I will forward you all the application shortly, but please spread the word to folks at your respective schools (in the future, once elections are established this will be an elected position iA).
Jazakum Allahu khair! Lemme know if you have any questions, concerns or suggestions.
