Double Honor

1Tim 5:17 Let the elders who rule well be counted worthy of double honor, especially those who labor in the word and doctrine.

By "double honor" he is referring first of all to respect and secondly to getting paid. This is the double honor. For just as he says in 1Tim 5:4 to repay one's parents, so also with spiritual parents. And besides, "the Lord has commanded that those who preach the gospel should receive their living from the gospel." 1Cor 9:14, which is why he speaks especially of those laboring in word and doctrine. Funny how most churches don't even offer to pay their Sunday school teachers and yet pay their pastor.

This tells us that one way in which to practice honoring others is to give them money.
