Speak Truthfully

Eph 4:25 Therefore each of you must put off falsehood and speak truthfully to his neighbor, for we are all members of one body.

This is not to say that we must tell our neighbor everything. But rather what we do say must be true. Jesus said of the devil, "When he lies, he speaks his native language, for he is a liar and the father of lies." John 8:44 And among those who will be thrown into the lake of fire is listed "liars" (Rev 21:8) And King David declared, "LORD, who may dwell in your sanctuary? Who may live on your holy hill? He whose walk is blameless and who does what is righteous, who speaks the truth from his heart" (Ps 15:1,2) among other things. But this is not a new command. It's found in the Law of Moses. "Do not steal. Do not lie. Do not deceive one another" Lev 19:11

It's important for Christians to have a reputation of telling the truth, else our effectiveness in communicating the gospel is compromised. Peter said, "We did not follow cleverly invented stories when we told you about the power and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ" 2Peter 1:16  Belief in the gospel is based upon belief in the integrity of the eyewitnesses, and upon the integrity of those who passed down such accounts. If we are found to characteristically deceived and lie to others, then why should anyone believe us? In fact concerning false teachers Peter says, "In their greed these teachers will exploit you with stories they have made up." 2Peter 2:3
